WoW Mage Guide

ultimate wow guideThe mage is known to be one of the highest damage dealers in world of warcraft. Players usually choose this class as they prefer to keep their enemies at distance in combat. The mage class is all about skill, with the ability of a wide range of high damage spells. However, the mage class is weak in melee combat and therefore should always be at distance. Their are a few choices for the race of the mage with the undead and blood elf being the most popular choices by players.

Basics of the Mage Class

The mage class is only capable of wearing cloth armour due to their lack of physical strength. Due to this, at the lower levels, it is harder in pvp combat until such spells as frost nova and sheep are given. Spells such as these are vital to the mage class as they ensure that the target is kept at distance for a period of time where damage can be inflicted. In the lower levels, the main damage is dealt from melee weapons, as not alot of spells are given and due to low mana reserves. Very few spells can be cast before there is not enough mana left.

Once you have grasped the fundamentals of the mage class, professions will need to be chosen. Professions are not compulsary, so it is your choice if you take any or not. However, it is definately recommended starting professions at the lower levels so that you can level them up as you level your character. Depending on what your plans are for your mage will depend on which professions you choose. Enchanting, Tailoring, Alchemy and Herbalism are the most common, but you are free to choose any professions you wish.

The majority of players will choose two professions that complement each other i.e. Herbalism and Alchemy. However, some players decide to use their mage (due to their high dps), to grind for raw materials and sell these in large quantity. Mining, herbalism, fishing and skinning are examples of these. There is definately not a need for professions such as Blacksmithing for the mage, and should not be taken.

Skills of the Mage Class

The player behind the mage must have quick reactions to deal with ambushes. A good grasping of spells is a must for the mage, as its three main categories of spells being Frost, Fire and Arcane all have their own advantages. This is also a common problem for any mage, as once talents can be chosen at level 10+, the mage will have to specify points in its talent tree (more on page 2). Mages require a huge mana supply as their own form of offence and defence is their spells. This is usually derived from the +Intellect property on armour and weapons, but their are some talent points that also help with this. Buffs in game can also increase mana, but only for a specified amount of time.
